Few people would visit Thomas, West Virginia, unless that person was skiing and staying at the Canaan Valley Resort (pronounced “Can - ain” with an emphasis on the last syllable). Although I wasn’t skiing, I did visit the area and stay at that resort. That’s how I ended up in Thomas eating lunch at the Purple Fiddle in early August, as that restaurant was just 13 miles from the resort and conveniently located near some antique shops on the main drag between the resort and Elkins.
The Purple Fiddle was created from the old DePollo general store on Front Street. The store was basically gutted, but the original tiled ceilings remain, along with many of the wood features. And, I’m sure that the old store didn’t resemble a poet/music/coffee shop straight out of a 1970’s Height Ashbury. Now, you’ll find quilts, bottle-cap shaking sticks, photographs, and memorabilia everywhere along the walls and hanging from the ceiling, along with a shelf filled with games to help pass a lazy morning with a friend while sipping latte.
John and Kate are the owners. I didn’t meet Kate, but I did meet John. He introduced me to Harry Manx when I asked about the music that was playing on the sound system (more about that musician later), and he made a mean Fiddlesticks Veggie Club sandwich for my lunch. The only thing I missed was the live entertainment. From the site:
Since opening 4 ½ years ago, we have never missed presenting a performance every Friday and Saturday night at 8:30 pm! Sure there has been some wicked weather up here at 3000 feet, resulting in some last-minute cancellations, but somehow we are blessed by amazing and responsive musical creatives who have always responded to our call at the eleventh hour.
These days we are thrilled to find that our music schedule practically fills itself six months in advance with nationally-touring professional acts eager to play our great-sounding, intimate space. For this we also give kudos to you, our customers, for always being attentive and respectful of the performances. Almost all of the bands mention this.
The stage, set in the corner of the large dining area, is perfect for small crowds who want to get up close and personal with the musicians. And the hardwood floors are designed for foot-stomping revelry. I’m sorry that I missed that action…
But, if I’m ever near Thomas again, I can guarantee you that I’ll stop at the Purple Fiddle for some good eats and for a trip back in time.
The Purple Fiddle is located just 1 mile from Thomas’ Mountain Made artisan gallery, 3 miles north of Blackwater Falls State Park, 10 miles north of Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, 13 miles north of Canaan Valley Resort. They’re also a little over 30 minutes south from Seneca Rocks, where you can find the Seneca Rocks Climbing School.
Visit the Purple Fiddle Website to get a glimpse into their varied and healthy deli menu and music venue.
