Small Birds in Peril - Populations Declining in U.S.

category: Animals

The U.S. bird population has been cut in half within the past ten years. Something has to be done to remedy this situation. One quick way to help a bit is to implement a law requiring domestic cats (the most prolific hunters on the planet) that are allowed to wonder outside to wear small bells to give the the sweet little birds an early warning about their approach. A few notes to show the decline in populations:

Field Sparrow Population Change 1967-2007: -68%

Lew Minter: Obsessed Artist Superdude

category: Art & Design

Lew Minter Wall SculptureI knew about my third cousin, Lew Minter, all my life. However, because our families went different ways geographically, Lew and I never met. We finally began to communicate by email about three years ago, and we began to share our obsessions. You see, we’re both artists, but Lew actually did something with his talent and skills, whereas I merely write about my knowledge. He’s involved with everything from painting to wall sculptures to digital prints and to digital reconstructions. The latter work has had him occupied for a great deal of time over the past few years, and it’s incredible. In fact, that work was part and parcel of what landed his images in the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna (Museum of Modern Art) in Rome.

His whole portfolio is great, but I want one of the wall sculptures (one example shown above). Or one of the digital prints…or…

Art on the Street

category: Art & Design

Manhole Cover

Manhole cover tableOne interesting medium for street art is the Storm Drain, and you can view a great collection of these paintings at flickr. But it is the Manhole Covers that seem to attract fanatics. “Manhole Graffiti” makes a magnificent table, and the artwork tends to be a trend in Japan.

For more images, check out the Japanese manhole covers at flickr and the results of the 2004 Vancouver BC “Art Underfoot” competition.

For those of you having a fanatic attack about designing manhole covers, you can begin to satisfy your cravings by reading the book, “Designs Underfoot: The Art of Manhole Covers in New York City“; or, you can just buy one to hang it from the New York First Company.
